On January 8th, 1916 the Italian troopship Cittá Di Palermo was sunk in the Adriatic 6 miles northeast of Brindisi, by a mine laid by the German submarine UC-14. On board were 143 British soldiers, mostly from the Royal Army Service Corps on their way to Salonika. Despite a number of minesweepers arriving swiftly on the scene over 50 of the British troops died, including Edgar Macklin. |
